When he was nine, Kip set another child on fire. Institutionalized for the next several years, Kip gains a reputation at the juvenile treatment facility, not only for killing another kid but also for being angry enough to snap at a moment's notice. With the help of a patient, wise therapist and the enduring love of his father, Kip does eventually get better and is released, ready for a new start. But in order to find one, he's going to have to change his name and move to another state. So Kip, his dad and his new stepmom pack up and move to Indiana, where Kip becomes ‘Wade Madison’. Indiana, with its ‘corn-fed’ football players, shopping malls and house parties, seems a world away from his old hometown in Alaska. Surely, Wade is now far enough away to be able to move past his dark secret. But Wade hasn't counted on the power of the ‘hungry ghost’, as his old therapist calls the hunger for false comforts that bring only temporary relief. Fueled by booze, anger and that old fear of the truth, Wade finds popularity and success only to jeopardise it all with a huge mistake.

I’LL BE WATCHING YOU Walking home on a dark night, you hear footsteps coming up behind you. As they get closer, your heart pounds harder. Who is closing in with dangerous intent—a total stranger? Or someone you know and trust? The answer is as simple as turning around, but don’t look behind you . . . run. Ann Rule, who shared her own nerve-jangling account of unknowingly befriending sadistic sociopath Ted Bundy in The Stranger Beside Me, chronicles other fateful encounters with the hidden predators among us in this riveting collection, fifteenth in the bestselling series drawn from her personal files. First in line is a stunning case that spanned thirty years and took a determined detective to four states—ending, finally, in Alaska—where he unraveled not one but two murders. A second case appears to begin and end with the hunt for the Green River Killer, focusing on a Washington State man who was once cleared as a suspect in that deadly chain of homicides. But the millionaire property owner believed he had successfully buried his own murderous past and the awful truth behind his young wife’s disappearance. She vanished soon after she left for a day at the Seattle World’s Fair, and her three small children grew up believing their mother had abandoned them. But one amazing witness remained—the missing woman’s best friend, who heard her last words in a frantic phone call—“He’s coming!”—before the line went dead. Only since Robert Hansen’s suicide has the monster within been revealed. In another true story, a petite woman went to a tavern, looking only for conversation and fun. Instead, she met violent death in the form of a seven-foot man who had seemed shy and harmless. You’ll feel a chill as you uncover these and numerous other cases of unfortunate victims who made one tragic mistake: trusting the wrong person—even someone they’d known intimately, or thought they knew.

Four families wake up one morning in their caravans, next to their cars, on an ordinary campsite in southern Sweden. However, during the night something strange has happened. Everything else has disappeared, and the world has been transformed into an endless expanse of grass. The sky is blue, but there is no sign of the sun; there are no trees, no flowers, no birds. And every radio plays nothing but the songs of sixties pop icon Peter Himmelstrand. As the holiday-makers try to come to terms with what has happened, they are forced to confront their deepest fears and secret desires, and in many cases expose the less appealing aspects of their character. Past events that they have tried to bury rise to the surface and take on a terrifying physical form. Can any of them find a way back to reality? I Am Behind You is a compelling, eerie new novel from the internationally bestselling author of Let the Right One In. John Ajvide Lindqvist lives in Sweden. His first novel, Let the Right One In, was published in thirty countries and adapted into two feature films. His novels Handling the Undead, Harbour and Little Star are also published by Text Publishing. ‘As imaginative and brilliant as any of [Stephen] King’s famous stories...Eerie and compelling.’ Canberra Weekly ‘A genuine skin-crawler of a book.’ Otago Daily Times ‘Every character—even the animals—is finely drawn in a surreal tale that is simply extraordinary.’ Courier-Mail ‘[Lindqvist’s] talent for psychological horror takes a new twist in his latest novel...A slow-burner with a few intense thrills up its sleeve.’ Sydney Morning Herald ‘Things end badly, with throat-cutting, melting flesh and a gruesome motoring accident, all timed impeccably and reported with unblinking clarity.’ NZ Listener

Why is America living in an age of profound economic inequality? Why, despite the desperate need to address climate change, have even modest environmental efforts been defeated again and again? Why have protections for employees been decimated? Why do hedge-fund billionaires pay a far lower tax rate than middle-class workers? The conventional answer is that a popular uprising against “big government” led to the ascendancy of a broad-based conservative movement. But as Jane Mayer shows in this powerful, meticulously reported history, a network of exceedingly wealthy people with extreme libertarian views bankrolled a systematic, step-by-step plan to fundamentally alter the American political system. The network has brought together some of the richest people on the planet. Their core beliefs—that taxes are a form of tyranny; that government oversight of business is an assault on freedom—are sincerely held. But these beliefs also advance their personal and corporate interests: Many of their companies have run afoul of federal pollution, worker safety, securities, and tax laws. The chief figures in the network are Charles and David Koch, whose father made his fortune in part by building oil refineries in Stalin’s Russia and Hitler’s Germany. The patriarch later was a founding member of the John Birch Society, whose politics were so radical it believed Dwight Eisenhower was a communist. The brothers were schooled in a political philosophy that asserted the only role of government is to provide security and to enforce property rights. When libertarian ideas proved decidedly unpopular with voters, the Koch brothers and their allies chose another path. If they pooled their vast resources, they could fund an interlocking array of organizations that could work in tandem to influence and ultimately control academic institutions, think tanks, the courts, statehouses, Congress, and, they hoped, the presidency. Richard Mellon Scaife, the mercurial heir to banking and oil fortunes, had the brilliant insight that most of their political activities could be written off as tax-deductible “philanthropy.” These organizations were given innocuous names such as Americans for Prosperity. Funding sources were hidden whenever possible. This process reached its apotheosis with the allegedly populist Tea Party movement, abetted mightily by the Citizens United decision—a case conceived of by legal advocates funded by the network. The political operatives the network employs are disciplined, smart, and at times ruthless. Mayer documents instances in which people affiliated with these groups hired private detectives to impugn whistle-blowers, journalists, and even government investigators. And their efforts have been remarkably successful. Libertarian views on taxes and regulation, once far outside the mainstream and still rejected by most Americans, are ascendant in the majority of state governments, the Supreme Court, and Congress. Meaningful environmental, labor, finance, and tax reforms have been stymied. Jane Mayer spent five years conducting hundreds of interviews-including with several sources within the network-and scoured public records, private papers, and court proceedings in reporting this book. In a taut and utterly convincing narrative, she traces the byzantine trail of the billions of dollars spent by the network and provides vivid portraits of the colorful figures behind the new American oligarchy. Dark Money is a book that must be read by anyone who cares about the future of American democracy.

Here is a story of self-discovery, entering adulthood and freeing oneself. The tone is sarcastic, lucid, cruel yet realistic. On a background of R&B and electronic music, Nicolas Fargues gives us an impressive and subtle account of gender relations and examining the choices one has made in the past." Ero dietro di te : you know what that means in English? It means I was behind you. She was actually sitting at a table behind us for the entire meal and she spent the whole time watching me without me realising. It's funny, but I'm starting to think that it wouldn't be stretching it to read something really symbolic into that phrase. It could also mean: 'For all this time, all these years, I've been right behind you, as close as can be, and you didn't notice me. It's obvious you and I were meant to be together, but we screwed it up every time. Still, I'm right here, right now, and I want you to know it, the ball's in your court, you won't be able to say no one told you and complain you let the chance of a lifetime slip through your fingers.' See what I mean?"
